This text will talk about the origins and information about the origins of Pokemon from my creative project, Pokemon Rominel. We will begin with the Grass-type Starter Pokemon of my fan-made region, Rominel: Wizappli, Magree, and Arcoak.
Although all three are based off of humanoids from different folklore and RPGs, there is one creature that they share attributes from: the treant. Treants are sentient (meaning they have human-like intelligence and can speak languages), humanoid-like trees that appeared in the original 1974 version of Dungeons and Dragons. They are said to be guardians of the forest, and will kill anyone who means to harm, disturb, or destroy their forest homes. Most treants are said to be as tall as the average tree, which is usually around 30-50 feet tall, and have the attributes of the trees in their homes (although in most artwork, they have the characteristics of oak trees). Most treants are of good nature, as they will do anything to make sure that their forest homes, and the plants and animals that reside in them, remain safe, although in some games they are enemies that can be battled. Treants are based off of the talking trees of ancient folklore, as well as Ents, the talking trees of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. They appear in other games as well, including World of Warcraft (although these are only about 4-5 feet tall), Pathfinder, and Wizards 101 (which appears as allies and enemies).
However, Wizappli, the tiny Starter Pokemon that is beginning to learn magic, is also based off of another humanoid of both folklore and fantasy games: the gnome. Not the tiny statues that are useful as garden decorations, but the mischievous little humanoids that dwell within remote forests. Like the treant, gnomes appeared in ancient folklore; they first appeared in stories and myths during the 16th century. The word "gnome" comes from the Latin word gnomus, which most likely derives from the word genomos, which translates to "earth-dweller". In their first publication, they are symbols of the element earth, very reclusive towards humans, and are said to have the ability to move through soil and dirt "like a human moves through air". Nowadays, gnomes are used in fantasy games as highly intelligent humanoids; however, their roles in behavior vary from game to game. In the Pathfinder series, they are relatives of the fey (i.e. fairy-like creatures), and have a natural sense to nature (most likely a parallelism of their 16th century versions); in World of Warcraft, they are unbelievably creative tinkers, managing to create futuristic machines, from specialized goggles to mechanical creatures.
Magree and Arcoak are based off of another humanoid common in folklore and the fantasy genre; the elf. Here, I'm talking about the wardens of magic and nature, not the toy making assistants of Santa Clause. Elves first appeared in Norse mythology, as a race of magically talented beings that either helped or hid from humans. The oldest text of the elf first appeared around the 10th century, describing them as disrupting humans and their livestock with "elf-shots"; either way, elves in mythology and folklore are depicted as supernatural beings of the forest, capable of immense magical abilities and guarding their forest homes (similar to the treant). Now, in the modern era, elves in the fantasy genre are told as solitary, attractive, slim, and graceful humanoids, whose skills are as varied as humans are; some elves are said to have incredible accuracy, making them deadly archers and hunters; others tell elves as beings of the forest, able to tap into the prime energy of nature itself, making them excellent druids or hermits; the rest describe elves as magically attuned spell casters, wizards, and sorcerers, somewhat similar to the folklore and myths of these creatures.
